District 11 uses a standards based ESL curriculum and online instructional programs to support our English learner students attain English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In all levels of ESL, an integrated instructional approach is used which provides the students with a wide range of experiences with both language and content.

Our goal for English learners is to be able successfully participate in mainstream English classrooms in all content areas.

Parents have the right to choose the English Language Development program service type.  District 11 offers either comprehensive English as a Second Language (ESL) school program or a Mainstream English Language Learner program in all district schools.  As students progress, they spend more time in mainstreamed classes and use the English as a Second Language resource room as a place to go for assistance in all curricular areas.

District 11 ELL teachers use the standards based National Geographic Curriculum to support our English learners in learning English.

  • In our middle schools, our ELL teachers use the National Geographic Inside curriculum and I-Ready as a supplemental online reading program to enhance student learning.  Additionally, Rosetta Stone is used by some of our English learners to help them gain English proficiency.
  • In our high schools, our ELL teachers use the National Geographic Edge curriculum.  Rosetta Stone is used by some of our English learners to help them gain English proficiency.
